The Chilean oceanic islands are located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean and include Easter Island, Salas y Gómez Island, Desventuradas Islands (San Félix Island and San Ambrosio Island), and the Juan Fernández Archipelago. They are of volcanic origin and are the emerged peaks of seamounts that form part of the Salas y Gómez and Nazca ranges that rise up from the Nazca tectonic plate. The islands are at a great distance from each other and from the South American continent, and their surrounding areas have depths around 4000 m to the ocean floor. The objective of this study is to update stomatopods and decapods records from these islands, from their surrounding waters and from the seamount ranges of which they are part of. Given that there is little information on some of these sites, and the records are disperse, a literature review is carried out, analysing different sources including both published reports and reports with limited circulation. To date, three families of Stomatopoda with five species and 57 families of Decapoda with 194 species have been recorded. Of this total, three species represent potential resources to develop fisheries and only another three are exploited to differing degrees (Jasus frontalis, Panulirus pascuensis and Chaceon chilensis). Their more relevant aspects, including their exploitation status, are described.

Using more than 200 genera and 431 species that comprise the 77 families of decapod crustaceans inhabiting Chilean waters, we attempted to reveal the underlying zoogeographical pattern of these taxa by comparing areas in terms of the number of shared species, genera, and families. To this end, the coasts and oceanic islands were divided into sixteen areas, encompassing most of the Nazca plate including Easter Island, Salas and Gómez Island, the Desventuradas Islands, and Juan Fernández Archipelago, as well as the underwater mountains of Salas & Gómez and Nazca (5 areas), the western coast of South America from Arica to Cape Horn (ca. 18°S-56°S; 10 areas), and the Antarctic peninsula and adjacent areas (1 area). The four resulting dendrograms coincided, showing six province: a) Chile-Peru (18º-42ºS); b) Magellan (42º-56ºS); c) Antarctica, including the Antarctic peninsula and the Scotia Arc archipelagos; d) Juan Fernández Archipelago (33º40'S; 79º00'W), including the Desventuradas Islands (ca. 26º20'S, 80ºW); e) Easter Island (27º09'S, 109º25'S); and f) the underwater mountains of Salas & Gómez and Nazca (ca. 25ºS; ca. 75ºW-100ºW). The dendrogram based exclusively on families inhabiting these diverse geographic areas identified two large clusters: the first encompassing the oceanic areas over the Nazca plate and the second the continental (10) and Antarctic (1) areas. In addition, decapod crustacean species of the southern tip of South America extend from the southeastern waters of the Pacific Ocean on one side of the Strait of Magellan to the southwestern waters of the Atlantic Ocean, reaching the Kerguelen Islands at the boundary of the Indian and Antarctic ocean.

Later, just a couple of decades ago, the first discovery of adult specimens of another slipper lobster was made in the waters of Rapa Nui, Arctides regalis, a species native to the Hawaiian Archipelago (Retamal 2000).…”

A male specimen of the Aesop slipper lobster Scyllarides haanii was found in the coastal vicinity of Ahu Tongariki (27°07'33"S, 109°16'37"W), Rapa Nui. Its taxonomic determination was carried out by a detailed morphological examination and a DNA barcoding identification analysis by sequencing the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) gene. S. haanii has a wide geographic distribution with occasional presence from the Indo-Pacific to the Hawaiian Archipelago, including the Red Sea, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Australia, Reunion, and French Polynesia; from 10 to 135 m of depth, preferably on rocky bottoms. This record extends the geographical distribution of S. haanii to Rapa Nui. It increases to five the species number of marine lobsters present on the island: a Palinuridae, Panulirus pascuensis and four Scyllaridae, Parribacus perlatus, Arctides regalis, Scyllarides roggevenni, and now S. haanii. This finding derived from the local initiative Pilotos to promote the sustainable management of coastal species, led by the Rapa Nui Sea Council ("Koro Nui o te Vaikava"), the elected authority in charge of the co-administration of Multiple Uses Marine Protected Area (MUMPA). The specimen will be deposited in the Crustacean Collection of the MNHNCL: accession number in GenBank (MW699539.1).
