BackgroundThe application of videoconferencing to the assessment and treatment of aphasia has been rapidly increasing; however, there is a need to develop treatments targeting sentence production in persons with aphasia (PWA) that can be delivered through videoconferencing. Structural priming has received recent attention as a potential training method for PWA. We investigated the feasibility and efficacy of a collaborative structural priming task delivered via the internet, TelePriming, in facilitating sentence production in PWA and healthy adults.MethodIn Study 1, young adults (YA), older adults (OA), and PWA participated in a collaborative dialogue-like priming task through videoconferencing, taking turns with an interlocutor (experimenter) to describe transitive action pictures with the goal of finding matching pictures. We measured whether participants produced more passive sentences to describe their picture after hearing their interlocutor produce passive compared to active sentences (primes). In Study 2, we compared the data from the OA and PWA of Study 1 (TelePriming) to different groups of OA and PWA, who completed the same priming task in person.ResultsAll three groups showed robust priming effects in Study 1, producing more passive sentences to describe target pictures after hearing the experimenter produce passive versus active sentences. In Study 2, when controlling for demographic information (age, education) and aphasia severity, TelePriming resulted in larger priming effects for OA and PWA, compared to the in-person priming task. Survey results revealed that both OA and PWA experienced increased comfort and satisfaction with using technology following the task.ConclusionInteractive message-structure alignment processes remain largely intact in PWA, and the positive effects of structural priming in a collaborative communicative task are not diminished by remote delivery. The findings demonstrate the feasibility and validity of TelePriming in OA and PWA, laying experimental groundwork for future use of TelePriming in the assessment and treatment of clinical populations with limited access to face-to-face sessions.

Objectives: The purpose of the study is to examine if the lexical priming effect is valid in persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In addition, this study attempted to examine the correlation between working memory and sentence production ability for MCI and healthy adults (HA).Methods: Fifteen individuals with MCI and sixteen HA described action pictures in sentences following lexical (agent or theme) primes. Priming effect was analyzed in terms of priming type and presence of distractor.Results: 1) Persons with MCI did show significantly lower proportion of passive sentences compared to HA. Overall, the proportion of passives were significantly higher in the theme primed condition versus the agent primed condition. 2) The difference in the presence of distractor stimuli in the agent primed condition was significantly larger than in the theme primed condition. 3) It was observed that the better the working memory ability of MCI participants, the higher the production of active sentences when compared with passive sentences in the theme primed condition.Conclusion: Persons with MCI used word-driven information as a strategy of sentence production like HA did. In addition, MCI participants showed difficulty in production of complex structures such as passive sentences. In previous research, most of the studies examined the priming effect through structural priming tasks for HA and aphasia patients. The results of this study also showed the effect of lexical priming in persons with MCI, and the finding of lower production of passive sentences in persons with MCI compared to HA emphasized the linguistic deficits that may appear in individuals with MCI.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine whether older adults exhibit reduced abilities in coordinating lexical retrieval and syntactic formulation during sentence production and whether an individual's working memory capacity predicts age-related changes in sentence production. Method: A total of 124 Korean-speaking individuals (79 young and 45 older adults) completed a lexical priming sentence production task. The participants described a target picture (a dog biting a monkey) after reading either an agent (dog) or a theme (monkey) prime word. The proportion of passive sentences was used as the dependent variable. Results: When the theme noun was primed, older adults produced fewer passive sentences than young adults. Working memory tasks significantly predicted individual differences in the sentence production of older adults. Conclusions: With aging, the ability to efficiently formulate syntactic structures in coordination with varying lexical information declines. Among older adults, age-related changes in these sentence production processes are associated with reduced working memory. Our constrained language production task is sensitive to detecting aging effects.
