Primulina hochiensis var. ochroleuca (Gesneriaceae), a new variety from a limestone area of Guangxi, China, and errata on five new species of Primulina

Abstract: Primulina hochiensis var. ochroleuca, a new variety from a limestone hill of karst areas, Guangxi, China is described with color photographs. It resembles P. hochiensis var. hochiensis, P. hochiensis var. ovata and P. hochiensis var. rosulata, but can be easily distinguished by a combination of characteristics, especially by its corolla color. We found only one population with approx. 3000 mature individuals at the type locality. This variety is provisionally assessed as vulnerable [VU C1] using IUCN c… Show more

“…As of February 2022, there were 221 species (excluding infraspecific taxa) ( GRC 2022 ) in this genus. China is the centre of diversity for Primulina with at least 204 species and 15 varieties occurring there at present ( Wen et al 2022 ), especially in limestone areas ( Wei 2018 ; Wen et al 2019 ; Ge et al 2020 ; Liu et al 2020 ; Xin et al 2020a , b , c , 2021 ; Zhang et al 2021 ). The tropical and subtropical karst limestone mountainous areas of Guangxi, China, are the centres of species diversity and differentiation of this genus ( Li et al 2019 ).…”

“… Primulina Hance ( Gesneriaceae ) is known to have more than 220 species, with the center of species diversity in south and southwest China and North Vietnam ( Weber et al 2011 ; Möller and Clark 2013 ; Möller et al 2016 ; Xu et al 2017 ; Li et al 2019 ; Möller 2019 ; IPNI 2021 ). As more than 40 new species have been described over the past five years, we now expect that more species will be discovered for the genus if further explorations are employed ( Möller 2019 ; Ge et al 2020 ; Tong et al 2020 ; Xin et al 2021 ).…”
