Principal characteristics of the Upper Silesian Block and Małopolska Block border zone (southern Poland)

Abstract: The Upper Silesian and Maĺopolska blocks are situated near the southwestern boundary of the East European Platform within the Trans-European Suture Zone. The Lower Palaeozoic lithologies of the blocks reveal different stratigraphic and diastrophic development. In the Upper Silesian Block, unmetamorphosed and gently folded Lower Cambrian to Ordovician sedimentary rocks rest on a Cadomian basement. The Lower Cambrian is represented by an older (sub-Holmia) Borzęta Formation and a younger (Holmia) Goczaĺkowice Fo… Show more

“…The sub-Mesozoic basement of the Silesian-Kraków Monocline includes folded Paleozoic formations divided by the Kraków-Lubliniec Fault Zone into the two tectonic blocks: the Małopolska and the Upper Silesian ones ( _ Zaba 1995( _ Zaba , 1999Buła et al 1997) (Fig. 1).…”

“…1). The fault zone is accompanied by Paleozoic intrusions clustered mostly along the margin of the Małopolska Block (Buła et al 1997;_ Zaba 1999). In the Kraków region, the Upper Jurassic sediments belong to the Oxfordian and the Kimmeridgian (Krajewski 2001).…”

“…The litological and facial differences in the Ordovician and Silurian deposits appear in the discrepancy on older strata. They occur as isolated areas, under the cover of incomplete Devonian, Carboniferous and Mesozoic strata (Buła et al 1997, 2002, Żaba 1999, Buła 2000, Jachowicz & Buła eds. 2010, Buła & Habryn 2011.…”
