Abstract: Purpose Gender inequality and sexism are often at the root of domestic violence against women and children, with both serving to justify male domination. This runs in parallel with mother-blaming bias, which constitutes a pervasive common sense and scientific error derived from the myth of the good and the bad mother, characterising a large part of studies on deviance. The purpose of this paper is to consider the possible role of sexism in prisoners’ deviant biographies; for this, the authors considered the ro… Show more

“…The data suggests that hostility towards women combined with implicit beliefs condoning violence is a significant predictor of physical violence. Consistent with this, sexist views substantiate violence against women and can lead to recidivism (Testoni et al, 2019).…”

“…Following the results of previous research carried out with people addicted to drugs in prisons concerning gender equality and sexism (Testoni, Branciforti et al, 2019), the main aim of this gender-sensitive project was to promote a culture of equal opportunities by challenging sexist attitudes. The secondary objective was to try to reduce the risk of a relapse into violent behavior in the future, just by working in the prison, a place where relationships are influenced by hegemonic masculinity, patriarchy, and machismo.…”

“…Moreover, while Italian graduated workers show gender-sensitive perspectives, Italian law enforcement members have been found to lack gender-sensitivity concerning intimate partner violence (Cannito, 2019). In addition, prisoners in Northern Italy have been found to accept fundamental sexism and paradoxical representations of women (Testoni, Branciforti, Zamperini, Zuliani, & Nava, 2019), indicating a pervasive cultural problem and a lack of recognition of the importance of sexism, as derived from hegemonic masculinity and patriarchy.…”
