Privacy of IoT-Enabled Smart Home Systems

Abstract: Digital ecosystems are going through a period of change due to the advancement in technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) as well as proliferation of less expensive hardware sensors. Through this chapter, we present current emerging trends in IoT in different industry sectors as well as discuss the key privacy challenges impeding the growth of IoT to reach its potential in the smart home context. The majority of the existing literature on IoT smart home platforms focuses on functionalities provided by sm… Show more

“…Machine learning also contributes to developing numerous solutions, such as chatbots [ 20 ], automated video analyzers for CCTVs [ 21 ], anomaly detection solutions [ 22 ], and intelligent computer–human interaction technologies [ 23 ]. Despite the beneficial applications of a smart home, these systems raise concerns, mainly regarding information security and privacy, since they are prone to data leakage, which might result in catastrophic consequences for users [ 24 , 25 ]. Figure 1 illustrates a schematic view of a smart home and a few of its applications.…”

“…The total of connected devices around the world is projected to be in tens of billions. Therefore, as the number of connected devices worldwide is expected to continue to expand exponentially, IoT systems are anticipated to become much more prevalent in the coming years [3][4][5]. Since this beginning, the number of connected devices has been ever increasing to an estimated 50 billion devices by 2020, shown below in Figure 1 [6].…”

“…A side effect of measuring with various smart systems is that for many people, it is still an invasion of their privacy. Besides, as mentioned earlier, people's behaviour also ensures that the systems are not always used optimally [47]. If the users of the systems did not have to deal with privacy or annoying people, the system to control the use of space could have looked very different.…”
