Pro- and Anti-inflammatory Cytokines in Steatosis and Steatohepatitis

Abstract: (1) Generally inconsistent changes in pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines occurred when NASH was globally compared to steatosis. (2) In contrast, downregulation of IL-6 and IL-10 was perceived in diabetics with NASH. (3) Arterial hypertension did not play a role in these circumstances. (4) IL-10 maintained strong correlations with glucose metabolism indices. (5) TNF-alpha could not be incriminated for progressive liver damage, as values failed to increase in NASH. (6) Investigations of IL-10 and other counter… Show more

“…The concentrations of IL‐6, IL‐10 and TNFα were similar between the groups. These cytokines have previously been shown to have a role in NAFLD, but reports are conflicting . This study was unable to show any significant differences in any of the three.…”

“…Research on serum levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in patients with NASH has so far produced inconsistent results. 35 A positive correlation has been reported between hepatic IL-6 expression, stage of fibrosis, and degree of systemic IR. 36,37 Moreover, activation of Kupffer cells and expression of death receptor Fas-ligand 12 has been shown to be associated with increased necrosis via activation of caspases and Fasligand mediated cell death.…”

“…This dramatic increase may reflect the fact that most of the patients were super-obese (BMI>60 kg/m 2 ), diabetic and had NASH-all factors associated with elevated IL-10 [29,30]. IL-10 has traditionally been viewed as an antiinflammatory cytokine [31].…”
