Proarrhythmic risk and determinants of cardiac autonomic dysfunction in collagen-induced arthritis rats

Abstract: BackgroundsPatients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD), which is two-fold higher than general population. The driving cause of SCD was considered due to lift-threatening arrhythmia where systemic inflammation acts as the pathophysiological basis linking RA to autonomicdysfunction.MethodsTo assess the sympathetic over-activity of “inflammatory reflex”, we measured heart rate variability (HRV) in a rat collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model, whose arthritis is induce… Show more

“…The short-long-short sequences of ventricular conduction in atrial fibrillation may trigger ventricular arrhythmias [27]. Besides, AF may increase sympathetic tone and decrease parasympathetic tone because of their hemodynamic effects and favor VF development, especially in male patients [28,29].…”

“…Additionally, both clinical and biochemical markers of RA disease activity correlate with the degree of autonomic dysfunction (7,75,156). Animal models of inflammatory arthritis also demonstrate that autonomic dysfunction can occur even when overt joint disease is apparently in remission (88).…”
