Probabilistic Analysis of Fatigue Behavior of Single Lap Riveted Joints

Abstract: This research deals with the fatigue behavior of 200 small single lap multiple-riveted joint specimens, widely used for aeronautic structures. The tests were performed with three different levels of stress with stress ratio R = 0.05; three levels were set: 90 MPa, 120 MPa and 160 MPa. The fatigue life and critical crack size for all tested specimens were analyzed. According to the results’ analysis, two types of fracture, through-hole and in proximity of the hole, were observed, depending on the level of stres… Show more

“…However, fatigue analysis is performed by considering that the fatigue life depends on the average value and on the amplitude of the fluctuating loads [16]. However, since several mechanical components are subjected to fluctuating load conditions, then fatigue analysis is required in order to estimate their lifetime [17,18]. On the other hand, fatigue analysis requires an estimation of the cycles to failure, which is achieved when a set of n samples are tested to failure.…”

“…In this work, the author presents how the squeeze force affects the residual stresses around the hole, which affects the fatigue strength. Armentani also observed two types of fracture, through the hole and in the proximity of the hole [ 10 ], depending on the level of stress: the higher the applied stress, the more cracking through the hole.…”

“…[6] General or detailed visual inspections (DVI) are performed during A and B-check (∼100 flights), while structural maintenance is typically performed by using non-destructive tests (NDT) [7] during the C and D-check (4000 ÷ 20 000 cycles) according to a fixed schedule in concertation with certification authorities. [8] Since inspection process is the major driver of maintenance cost, the structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have been introduced in aviation industry [9,10] for moving from the scheduled maintenance based on manual inspection to the condition based DOI: 10.1002/masy.202000302 maintenance (CBM) or even more to predictive maintenance (PdM). SHM systems allow to monitor and detect the damages by on board sensors attached to supervised structure, [11] such as fuselage, landing gears and bulkheads.…”
