Probabilistic assessment of SMRFs with infill masonry walls incorporating nonlinear soil-structure interaction

Abstract: Infill Masonry Walls (IMWs) are used in the perimeter of a building to separate the inner and outer space. IMWs may affect the lateral behavior of buildings, while they are different from those partition walls that separate two inner spaces. This study focused on the seismic vulnerability assessment of Steel Moment-Resisting Frames (SMRFs) assuming different placement of IMWs incorporating nonlinear Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI). The aim is to explore the damage states of IMWs and use their ability for impr… Show more

“…The relationship between the sub and super-structure is examined by modelling the soil as simply as possible to reflect the system's overall reaction. The research demonstrated how taking into account different variables, such as SSI and wall placement, significantly affects the building frame's period, displacement, and base shear [58]. Therefore, it is crucial to take into account all of these factors when analyzing designs.…”

“…Non-linear dynamic analysis has been used in research on the SSI impacts on the "seismic performances" of two-dimensional RC "Moment-Resisting Frames" (MRFs) [60]. The study shows that SSI has a different impact on seismic demand based on the modelling approach, with respect to maximum base shear as well as maximum inter-story drift ratio [61]. Few scholars have applied thorough nonlinear dynamic study of structures with various lateral "load-bearing" systems based on flexible soil.…”

“…Since the collapse of structures may occur due to external loads such as impact force of adjacent structures [14][15][16] or internal loss of strengths due to weakness of structural elements such as connections defects or gusset plates [17][18][19], there is a need to consider the damaged effects on the retrofitting of structures. The use of FVDs and BRBs in retrofitting damaged buildings under seismic MA sequences is especially important as these devices can absorb energy and reduce the force transmitted to the structure during both the mainshock and aftershocks.…”
