PurposeThis study provides an analysis of patch repair for cracked aircraft structures. Delamination is a type of damage that affects the patch's behavior. The purpose of this study is to assess the influence of delamination on repair performance.Design/methodology/approachAn analytical and numerical study using the finite element method was conducted for a cracked plate repaired with a patch containing a pre-existing delamination defect. The method for defining the contact pair surfaces and modeling the delamination interaction within the patch interface is specified using the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) approach.FindingsThe efficiency of the repair is measured in terms of the J-integral. The effects of delamination initiation, mechanical loading, crack length and patch stacking sequences are presented. It is noted that in mode I, delamination propagation is only significant at node A. The numerical results are in good agreement with those of the analytical solution found in the literature. It is observed that the patch's behavior is strongly dependent on loading, crack size and stacking sequences in terms of reducing the structure's lifespan, especially in the presence of delamination.Originality/valueThe numerical modeling presented by the VCCT approach is highly valuable for studying delamination evolution. The influence of loading, crack size and stacking sequences on repair performance is discussed in this work.

Glass Fiber and resin composites represent a significant advance in the industry thanks to their lightness, strength, and versatility. Their mechanical strength, highlighting a number of critical aspects in the development of high-performance materials, opens up new prospects in sectors as diverse as aerospace, automotive, and construction, among others. These advances stimulate ongoing research and development in the field of composite materials, underlining the importance of these efforts in meeting future needs in terms of materials performance and durability. This study examines the capacity to predict the durability of polyester-glass fiber composites when subjected to tensile loading. The experimental approach involves exploring the mechanical properties of the composite material and changes in glass fiber content, fiber length, and plate thickness. The process includes performing tensile tests on composite specimens to assess characteristics like Young's modulus and fracture stress. The study uses analytical prediction tools, precisely the Monte Carlo approach, to evaluate the damage distribution within the composite material. The study emphasizes the substantial influence of glass fiber content with a maximum content of 60% mass resin and length with the optimum size of 60 mm on the mechanical properties where Young's modulus attains a value of 4 GPa and longevity of the composite. The study highlights the significance of plate thickness in improving structural performance and fracture toughness, where Young's modulus shows consistency across varying thicknesses. In contrast, stress shows an increasing trend with thickness, culminating in a value of 3.4 MPa. The results enhance comprehension of polyester-glass fiber composites' mechanical characteristics and prediction ability under tensile stress.

In this work, the crack growth analysis of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer nanocomposite has been performed using extended finite element method. The equivalent properties such as elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, fracture energy, and fracture toughness of the polymer nanocomposites have been evaluated by varying the percentage of carbon nanotube in terms of weight (both single-walled carbon nanotube and multi-walled carbon nanotube) in the polymer matrix. The elastic modulus of the polymer nanocomposite has been evaluated using modified Halpin–Tsai equation. The fracture energy of the polymer nanocomposite has been computed considering carbon nanotube pull-out and carbon nanotube debonding as the main toughening criterion. In the extended finite element method, the crack faces are modeled by discontinuous Heaviside jump functions, whereas the singularity in the stress field at the crack tip is modeled by crack tip enrichment functions. The value of stress intensity factor is evaluated using the domain form of interaction integral. The level set method has been used to track the crack growth. The numerical examples with an edge and a center crack in the polymer nanocomposite are analyzed and the influence of various parameters such as percentage of carbon nanotube and the aspect ratio on stress intensity factor are observed.
