Optimization Models under Uncertainty in Distributed Generation Systems: A Review

Distributed generation systems (DGSs) are one of the key developments enabling the energy transition. DGSs provide users with increased control over their energy use and generation, but entail greater complexity in their design and operation. Traditionally, optimization models have been used to overcome this complexity, and currently, research is focusing on integrating uncertainties on them. This review attempts to analyze, classify and discuss 170 articles dealing with optimization of DGSs under uncertainty. A survey has been performed to identify the selected manuscripts and the strengths and weaknesses of previous reviews. As a result, an innovative classification has been designed and the distinct elements of optimization models in DGSs have been highlighted: microgrid architecture, sources of uncertainty, uncertainty addressing methods, problem types and formulations, objective functions, optimization algorithms and additional features. Each part is detailed thoroughly to provide an instructive overview of the research output in the area. Subsequently, several aspects of interest are discussed in depth: the future of dealing with uncertainty, the main contributions and trends, and the relative importance of the field. It is expected that this review will be of use to both experts and lay people to learn more about the current state of optimization models in DGSs and provide insights into how to further develop this field.

This paper studies the resilience and energy management in multi-microgrid system. In the proposed model, the microgrid is formed by four sub-microgrids. Based on the system of systems (SOS), these sub-microgrids pool their resources and capacities together to form a new and more complex microgrid that provides further functionality than the basic separated microgrids. One of the sub-microgrids is connected to the external grid. The tie-line connections are between all sub-microgrids. Some connections are normally-open and the rest are normally-closed. The status of normally-open connections is changed to close when the resilience or economic criteria dictate. The sub-microgrids are integrated with solar panels, wind turbines, battery energy storage (BES) and loads. All sub-microgrids are also equipped with diesel generator as emergency resource. Under normal operating condition, the proposed model optimally utilizes the resources of all sub-microgrids to minimize the cost, pools the extra resources of sub-microgrids, and optimizes the operation of batteries and diesel generators. Under faulty operating condition when some or all sub-microgrids are islanded, the model supplies the loads with zero load curtailment and minimizes the costs. In the faulty condition, the model may change the status of connections from normally-open to close when required. The simulation results on a given test system verify that the recommended model confirms optimal operation of the microgrid. Furthermore, all sub-microgrids, improves resilience, minimizes operating cost, handles the events and achieves zero load curtailment under both faulty and healthy conditions. Energy efficiency management, in addition to the balance between energy supply and demand, requires thorough policy and elaborate decision-making by governments to adopt appropriate strategies to achieve the targeted goals. Combined heat and power systems featuring a decentralized and independent generation model of both electricity and heat, which procures efficient utilization of wasted energy, prevention of losses in distribution and transmission grid. Furthermore, the deployment of such a scheme results in reducing fuel consumption as well as the emission of environmental pollutants, increasing competitiveness, and liquidity in electricity markets. Optimal scheduling of small-scale combined heat and power systems in response to the consumption pattern and the electrical and heat demand of a typical customer as well as the type of interactions and interoperability with the aggregators and the market is an innovative paradigm to improve the efficiency of distributed generation resources. Due to the physical correlation between these two types of energy, the effective implementation of such schemes entails meticulous configuration and arrangement, precise modeling, and even rigorous simulation. Hence, to get a convincing and superb performance, particular attention must be paid to the model. This paper delves into the impacts of energy exchange between CHP and the upstream grid and the way to optimize it subject to satisfaction of the optimal capacity constraints. In this regard, the linear modeling method is employed and the optimization problem is solved by Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) using MATLAB software. The Islamic Azad University of Najafabad (IAUN) complex is considered as the case study in this paper. The results imply that a significant part of the energy generated in the combined heat and power unit can be sold to the grid, this will play a vital role in reducing the cost of electricity supply.
