Probing heavy neutrino oscillations in rare W boson decays

Abstract: In this work, we study the lepton number violating W boson and top quark decays via intermediate on-shell Majorana neutrinos Nj into three charged leptons and a light neutrino. We discuss the neutrino oscillation effects present in the decay due to the small mass gap between the heavy neutrino states (∆MN ∼ ΓN ). We focus on a scenario that contains at least two heavy Majorana neutrinos in the mass range ∼ 2−80 GeV. The results indicate that the modulation of the branching ratios as a function of the distance … Show more

“…For heavy neutrinos that are produced in W boson decays, the sensitivity is only marginally increased when lowering trigger thresholds, i.e., point iii), because most µ ± from the primary vertex have p T > 25 GeV due to the mass of the W boson. It remains well below what can be achieved in proton collisions at the LHC [76,[78][79][80][81][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92].…”

“…The external wave packet model allows one to unambiguously establish the expression for the oscillation phase and check that the entire process remains coherent in all experimentally relevant situations. The present paper does not aim to be a detailed study of HNL oscillations, which have already been covered in various settings and limits in the literature [10,24,29,[41][42][43][44][45]. Therefore, we will only quote the main result.…”
