Probing of the interfacial Heisenberg and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya exchange interaction by magnon spectroscopy

Abstract: Abstract. This Topical Review presents an overview of the recent experimental results on the quantitative determination of the magnetic exchange parameters in ultrathin magnetic films and multilayers, grown on different substrates. The experimental approaches to probe both the symmetric Heisenberg as well as the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction in ultrathin magnetic films and at interfaces are discussed in detail. It is explained how the experimental spectrum of magnetic excitations can… Show more

“…The direct measurement of the IDMI was performed by BLS spectroscopy based on the IDMI-driven asymmetric dispersion shift of long-wavelength thermal spin waves in Damon-Eshbach surface mode 42,43 . The effective IDMI energy density (D eff ) was determined from the direct measurements of the frequency shift (Δf) between Stokes and anti-Stokes spin-wave propagation regimes, f s , and f as , respectively:…”

“…For Fe/Ir(001) strong DMI has also been reported 45,46 and the possible formation of an atomic spin lattice due to higher-order exchange interaction has been suggested 46 . Antiferromagnetic exchange interactions at the interfaces of thin Fe films and multilayers on Ir(001) have also been observed experimentally [47][48][49] . However, the Ir(001) surface exhibits a (5 × 1) reconstruction which makes the preparation of a pseudomorphic Fe monolayer on Ir(001) difficult [50][51][52] .…”

“…In Fig. 4, we compare entropies of entanglement for an antiferromagnet with a simple cubic crystal structure, where the Hamiltonian is effectively described by nearest neighbor Heisenberg exchange as well as DM interaction with typical ratio D/J ≈ 30% [19][20][21]. It can be seen that from (a, b) modes to (α, β) modes the Heisenberg contribution to entanglement decreases while the DM-induced magnon CV entanglement increases.…”
