Probing the Comparative Bioefficacy of Allium sativum L. Bulb through Different Solvents

Abstract: Abstract. Allium sativum (garlic), an aromatic bulbous plant is one of the most vital and oldest authenticated herbs which has been utilized from ancient times as a traditional medicine. A. sativum has cardioprotective, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant and anticancer properties due to a large range of phenolic compounds and sulfur containing compounds. The current study was conducted to assess the antioxidant chemistry, and numerous bioactivities of A. sativum bulbs extracts in diffe… Show more

“…Absorbance was measured with a microliter plate reader at 570 nm. MIC was determined using the following formula (20,21): Percentage of inhibition = 1 − (Optical density (OD) test/OD Positive Control) × 100. In addition, the MIC50 was calculated based on the linear equations of the standard MIC curves versus the concentration of the plant extracts.…”

“…Folin-Ciocalteu reagent method was used to determine the total amount of phenol in the aqueous extract (21,27). 1 mL of plant extract was mixed with 2 mL of 2% solution of Na2CO3 and 2.5 mL of 10% Folin-Ciocalteu reagent at room temperature.…”

“…Later, distilled water was utilized to dissolve these extracts and separating funnel was used for fractionation of a few polarity-based solvents viz. ethyl acetate, chloroform, n-hexane, methanol, n-butanol and ethanol along with water at 1:10:10 ratio (extract: distilled water: solvent) and then for further use were preserved at 4 ºC [6].…”
