A suite of non-polar adsorptives of different kinetic diameters and shape were used to determine adsorption and pore filling mechanism of a well-characterised poly(furfuryl alcohol)-based activated carbon. Triplicate measured Type I adsorption isotherms for each adsorptive were averaged to provide standard deviation in relative pressures and associated amounts adsorbed. Plateau amounts adsorbed for N2, Ar, CH4, and C6H6, provided Gurvitsch volumes averaged to 0.368 ± 0.015 cm 3 (liq)/g. The calculated Gurvitsch volumes were compared with those derived via the Dubinin-Radushkevich (DR) equation. Additional adsorptives were CO2, iso-butane and SF6. The results of these 7 adsorptives were used to qualitatively analyse and decode a micropore filling adsorption mechanism. The DR equation was also used for further analysis of the pore filling mechanism. Based on the adsorbate-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbent interactions, adsorbates were classified into three groups: (a) Non-polar with nonspecific interactions (no dipole, no quadrupole, not readily polarizable: Ar, N2, CH4 and iso-butane), adsorbing as a continuous uptake over the observed relative pressure range; (b) Non-polar adsorptives with potential for specific interactions (no dipole, quadrupole moment: CO2 and C6H6), adsorbing as a condensation process over a relatively narrow relative pressure range in a medium pressure range; (c) Halogenated adsorptives (no dipole, no quadrupole, polarizable: SF6), adsorbing with an S-shaped uptake extending over a relatively broad relative pressure range.

Calix[n]arenes have found new applications in the area of thin films . Thin films can be thought of as two dimensional supramolecular materials that are of both fundamental and industrial interest . Calix[n]arenes and resorcin[4]arenes can be deposited as thin films through a variety of techniques such as Langmiur-Blodgett, self-assembly , and evaporative methods. This chapter examines the physical properties of thin films and their interactions with their environment. In particular, thin films of calix[n]arenes and their adsorption of metal ions, molecular ions , and neutral organic molecules have become of great interest for use in new devices for sensing, nonlinear optics, pyroelectric and semiconductor applications. 8.1 Introduction Calix[n]arenes and resorcin[4]arenes (Figure 1) have become important molecules for the preparation of new supramolecular materials.14 These novel materials have been examined for purely fundamental interest but, often they have other potential applications. Central to their ongoing development as new supramolecular materials are their host-guest properties. Calix[n]arenes and resorcin[4]arenes have found applications in thin films, chromatography supports, polymers and catalysts. The growing interest in the study of membraneactive ion (in particular, anion) transporters motivates the investigation of the mechanisms that underlie the transport process. The interest of the scientific community in this area is largely due to the great importance of transmembrane ion-transport phenomena in many diseases. In this paper we investigated the role of calix[6]arene-based pseudorotaxanes and rotaxanes on transmembrane transport of ions across the bilayer of liposomes composed of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylsn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC; diameter 100 nm). We evaluated the effect of these interlocked systems on the properties of the bilayer and on membrane permeability towards chloride ions and 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein. These findings may pave the way for the construction of new generations of pharmacological systems regulating the transport of chloride ions.[a] Dr.
