Probiotic and prebiotic feed additives in calf nutrition

Abstract: The target of the research was to analyze the effect of antidiarrheal feed additives on calves average daily weight gain. In the study, 120 calves were analyzed. Newborns were selected into 3 treatment groups, control (without supplementation) and group with Ascophyllum nodosum (prebiotics), and mixture of Lactobacillus sporogenes, Enterococcus faecalis and Bifidobacterium bifidum (probiotics). Individual body weight of animal were determined after 2 hours postpartum. Monitoring of the growth intensity, as wel… Show more

“…Additionally, growth and intake were also influenced by LAB DFMs. In some cases, ADG was improved [105,108,116], or alternatively, final body weight, whither, and hip height were improved [110]. Starter dry matter intake [108] and feed efficiency were also improved [105].…”

“…As a recommendation, DFMs should be administered as soon as possible, before the onset of disease or infections, in order to be efficiently utilized [100]. Some studies suggest that it may be beneficial to start administration as soon as the first colostrum meal [103,116,117].…”

“…Conneely et al (2014) analyzed the effect of the amount of milk feed and the frequency of feeding on the behaviour, health, and body weight of the calves. Although no significant relationship between probiotic intake and calf weight gain in early life could be statistically verified (Zábranský et al, 2021;Zábranský et al, 2022), it is still important for ensuring healthy conditions during this very sensitive growth period of the calf. Similarly, Borderas et al (2009) addressed the standing and lying down behaviour, as well as the setting preferences of calves and dairy cows.…”

“…In recent years, the poultry industry has routinely used novel feed ingredients and supplements with potential to improve bird productivity by enhancing the nutritional quality of the feed. Examples of such materials include co-products from the bread industry (Penkov and Chobanova, 2020), fermented feeds (Dairo and Fasuyi, 2007), alternatives to soybean meal (Abdulla et al 2017;Whiting et al 2019;Karkelanov et al, 2020), antioxidants (Pirgozliev et al, 2020;Woods et al, 2020), exogenous enzymes (Jimoh et al, 2018), probiotics (Such et al, 2020), prebiotics (Zábranský et al, 2021) and plant extracts (Marć-Pieńkowska et al, 2019).…”
