Probiotic-fermented purple sweet potato yogurt activates compensatory IGF-IR/PI3K/Akt survival pathways and attenuates cardiac apoptosis in the hearts of spontaneously hypertensive rats

Abstract: Apoptosis is recognized as a predictor of adverse outcomes in subjects with cardiac diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of probiotic-fermented purple sweet potato yogurt (PSPY) with high γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content on cardiac apoptosis in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) hearts. The rats were orally adminsitered with 2 different concentrations of PSPY (10 and 100%) or captopril, 15.6 mg/kg, body weight (BW)/day. The control group was administered distilled water. DAPI and TUNE… Show more

“…Although skeletal muscle accounts for more than 80% of postprandial glucose disposal, the ablation of the insulin receptor specifically in muscle resulted in normal glucose tolerance (6). Otherwise, probiotics may compensate for deficits in the insulin-like growth factor I receptor/PI3K/ Akt survival pathways and attenuate cardiac apoptosis in spontaneously hypertensive rats (21). As for the insulin signaling pathway, we demonstrated that oral administration of Bifidobacterium spp.…”

“…This study showed that rats under probiotic regimen have presented a significant attenuation of left ventricular hypertrophy, as showed by tissue weight and gene expression of atrial natriuretic peptide, and an improvement on LVEF [6]. Additionally, another animal study has showed that treating spontaneously hypertensive rats with probiotic-fermented purple sweet potato yogurt is beneficial, as suggested by reduced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and improvement in myocardial and interstitial remodeling [7]. Our study has showed that patients with chronic systolic HF submitted to a short-term probiotic therapy present an improvement in LVEF (p = 0.005) and a reduction on left atrial diameter (p = 0.044), seen in Fig.…”

“…The apoptotic pathway exhibits increased levels with a reduced survival pathway in these situations. Exercise training and eating purple sweet potato yogurt can help to prevent heart failure and apoptosis Kuo et al 2005;Lin et al 2013;van Tol et al 2006;Huang et al 2012). Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) of advanced age exhibit depressed myocardial contractile function and ventricular fibrosis, and as a result, stable compensatory hypertrophy progresses to heart failure.…”
