Probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus EM1107 prevents hyperglycemia, alveolar bone loss, and inflammation in a rat model of diabetes and periodontitis

Abstract: Background This study evaluated the antihyperglycemic, anti–bone‐resorptive, and anti‐inflammatory efficacy of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus EM1107 in an experimental model of ligature‐induced periodontitis in diabetic rats treated with metformin (Met). Methods A total of 114 male Wistar rats was randomly divided into six groups: (1) control, (2) experimental periodontitis (EP), (3) EP + diabetes mellitus (DM), (4) EP + probiotic (Prob), (5) EP + DM + Prob, and (6) EP + DM + Prob + Met. The animals rec… Show more

“…Precise microbiome can be used in medicine to treat not only intestine‐related disorders but can also be used to improve the health of skin, liver, brain and other distant organ systems. There are several reports, supports the notion of using probiotics in precise medicine such as some strains of Lactobacillus used to prevent hyperglycaemia, alveolar bone loss and inflammation in murine models of inflammation, diabetes and periodontitis 121,122 and osteoporosis.…”

“…[ 16 ] Additionally, other variables could have a significant influence. In fact tooth brushing movement [ 17 ] and probiotics have been demonstrated to have an influence on plaque and other periodontal parameters in pediatric, [ 18 ] periodontal, [ 19 ] and surgical [ 20 ] patients. These techniques and compounds should be evaluated in combination with orthodontic treatment in future clinical trials.…”

“…Administration of L. rhamnosus EM1107 reduces levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and TNF-α in gingival tissue fragments and alleviates bone loss in periodontitis rats, suggesting its anti-boneresorption and anti-inflammation efficacy (Silva, Cruz, et al, 2022).…”
