Probiotics for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis

Abstract: The results do not provide sufficient evidence for or against recommending probiotics for the treatment of BV. The metronidazole/probiotic regimen and probiotic/estriol perparation appear promising but well-designed randomized controlled trials with standardized methodologies and larger patient size are needed.

“…Sometimes probiotic ‘cocktails’ comprising of various strains are used [39,40,41]. Several probiotic strains of microorganisms are effective in competing against common causes of travellers’ diarrhoea [39,42] caused mostly by bacterial pathogens such as: one of the seven types of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli , Campylobacter jejuni and Shigella species.…”

“…Likewise, probiotic therapies may have some utility in the prevention of recurrent BV, particularly if combined with an effective antibiotic therapy that will destabilise the pathologic flora, although larger-scale clinical trials are needed. 109 Clearly Koch's postulates have provided a benchmark for studies of microbial pathogenicity and their relevance has survived over a century of scientific progress. 1 Indeed, it is possible organisms remain to be discovered that satisfy these postulates with regard to the aetiology of some apparently polymicrobial diseases.…”

“…Though no proper in-vitro model of the bacterial vaginosis film at present exists, it is worth mentioning that a recent series of experiments do suggest that probiotics may have a place as an adjuvant to antibiotic therapy in treating bacterial vaginosis as has been found in clinical studies [17]. McMillan et al [18 && ] grew a 12-mm thick confluent A. vaginae and G. vaginalis biofilm, which they evaluated for changes occurring with antibiotic and probiotic treatment.…”
