Problem-Solving in Product Innovation Based on the Cynefin Framework-Aided TRIZ

Abstract: Different problems in the process of product innovation are often caused by external environmental changes of the product. There is a lack of research on classifying the problems associated with product environment changes to aid in applying tools of the Theory of the Solution of Inventive Problems (TRIZ) for problem-solving. This paper proposes a Cynefin framework to classify the problems into disorder, chaotic, complexity, complicated and simple areas according to the external environment changes. Each area … Show more

“…It is often said that an accurate definition of a problem solves 90 percent of problems. Scholars have suggested listing as many attributes of a product as possible, as the plausible root causes of product problems using a problem explorer [43], function/attribute analysis [44], ideal final result [45], and the Cynefin framework [46]. Since the studies above suggest leaps and intuitive thinking rather than a synthetic methodology, and recommend using fewer resources or existing technology to solve difficult problems, the quality of the creative ideas looked for is uneven.…”

“…TRIZ is a scientific methodology for problem-solving that was generated by Altshuller's team by studying and generalizing a large amount of patent library knowledge [68]. It is widely used as a powerful problem-analysis tool and problem-solving tool for the innovative design of products [69][70][71]. Computer-aided innovation (CAI) software is an innovative technology based on TRIZ theory that incorporates modern design methodology, computer technology, and multi-domain subjects [72,73].…”
