“…Our data indicate that behavioral health and wellness interventions with college students may be improved by incorporating problem-solving perspectives. Counselors can integrate problem-solving strategies into prevention groups (Heppner, Neal, & Larson, 1984), in self-management interventions to foster the acquisition of specific stress-reducing skills (e.g., study skills; Richards & Petri, 1978), and in the treatment of recurrent problems with emotional problems (e.g., depression; Nezu, 1986;Nezu & Petri, 1989). Problem-solving interventions can be effective in reducing hopelessness and loneliness (Lerner & Clum, 1990).…”

“…In line with this, problem solving was identified as a prevention strategy for adolescent emotional problems (Heppner et al 1984;Spence et al 2003). Empirical evidence suggests that problem-solving therapy (PST) is an effective treatment for depression (Arean et al 1993;Biggam and Power 2002;Dowrick et al 2000;Nezu 1986) and suicidal problems (Lerner and Clum 1990;Salkovskis et al (1990;Townsend et al 2001) in adults and to some extent young adults.…”

“…However, some semantically similar terms, such as planfulness, forecasting, and anticipation of the future, are mentioned frequently. For example, Stevens (1973) found that high school students who "look ahead" develop greater job-seeking readiness; Levinson (1978) mentioned that coping with transitions need to be foreseen; Super (1983) emphasized the critical importance of "future perspective" toward planning and exploration when measuring career maturity; and Heppner, Neal, and Larson (1984) found that preventive training in problem solving is beneficial to college students. Recently, Brown, Cober, and Kane (2007) examined the impact of proactive personality in the process of graduates' job hunting and demonstrated a significant correlation between proactive personality and job search success (r = .22).…”
