Show more

“…The hypothesis of connection and disconnection of Pátzcuaro and Zirahuén lakes during the last 700 000 years [ 19 ] is supported by stratigraphic [ 85 ]; limnologic data [ 86 , 87 ]; shared native icthyofauna such as Chirostoma estor , Chirostoma pátzcuaro (Atherinopsidae), Algansea lacustris (Cypronidae), Alloophorus robustus , Skiffia lermae , Allotoca dugesii , and Goodea atripinnis (Goodeidae) [ 88 ]; and genetic data [ 12 , 89 ].…”

“…The low genetic distance between the Cuitzeo and the Lerma region supports an ancient connection between these historically isolated regions. The paleo‐corridor that allowed fauna interchange between Cuitzeo and Middle Lerma could be constituted by the channel known as La Cinta, located in the northern region of Cuitzeo Lake, that drained toward the Middle Lerma during the Quaternary period (Israde‐Alcántara et al, 2008). This ancient connection is also evidenced by the low genetic distance between other co‐distributed species such as the cyprinids Notropis calientis (Domínguez‐Domínguez et al, 2009) and Algansea tincella (Pérez‐Rodríguez et al, 2009), the goodeids Neotoca bilineta (Ornelas‐García et al, 2012) and Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis (Domínguez‐Domínguez et al, 2008), and the poeciliid Poeciliopsis infans (Beltrán‐López et al, 2018).…”

“…The central issue regarding the reintroduction of H. turneri in LC is that the system requires a major intervention, including habitat restoration at multiple spatial scales [86]. Several plans have been elaborated by the government [84,87] and research institutions [50,88], and they have already answered some critical questions, including those related to the disturbances associated with land use, the amount of natural land cover in the basin, the impact and treatment of residual solids, and the implementation of wetlands to reduce nutrient inputs [1,89]. Unfortunately, the misperception of the lake as a decaying, senescent, and hypereutrophic water body has overshadowed the understanding of the multiple ecosystem services it provides, which has reduced the support for restoration efforts [46].…”
