Problems of Beam Focusing by Electromagnetic Field in Linear Electron Accelerator with Standing Wave, Based on Biperiodic Structure

Abstract: In the presented paper problems of particles dynamics in linear electron accelerators with standing wave are discussed. The focus of the study is a possibility of use of focusing properties of electromagnetic accelerating field for passing an electronic beam through aperture of biperiodic slow-wave structure (BSS), which will lead to a significant reduction of an accelerator's sizes. The calculation methodology is proposed and results of the study of particle dynamics in accelerators with standing wave based o… Show more

“…Efficiency of standing wave linac can be increased by multibeam accelerating systems. Their optimum operation can be provided only by focusing by electromagnetic eigenfield [11,12]. In addition, it is possible to improve focusing properties of accelerating systems of standing wave linac by modification of shape of accelerating cells, which provides better implementation of focusing capabilities of both radial component of electric field and azimuthal component of magnetic field.…”

“…Steady radial motion of particles in standing wave accelerator with high-frequency (HF) focusing is possible only in the phase region where energy gain is not maximum [10]. It is reasonable to implement HF focusing mode in accelerating structures with high shunt resistance in order to preserve high rate of energy gain by electrons over total accelerator length.…”

“…If the function of distribution of electric field intensity along the axis of standing wave linac is considered at certain time, then it can be seen that it is comprised of alternated pulses of different polarity with spatial period equaling to the generator wavelength (Novozhilov, Filatov, Shilov, 2015). The most promising in standing wave linac is focusing upon which beam transmission is based on focusing action of the electromagnetic field itself (Fainberg, 1962).…”
