Problems with rectal foreign bodies

Abstract: Case reports operation because of the extensive adhesions. Subsequent reoperation was necessary because additional bezoars were left in the stomach and later caused a new obstruction.Small bowel obstruction by phytobezoar after gastric operation is a preventable complication. The surgeon, the gastro-enterologist and the general physician must instruct patients to avoid consumption of persimmons, and to reduce the consumption of fibre-rich fruits and vegetables.

“…In this review, only the three case series which focused on inserted and retained foreign bodies (French et al,9 patients [7]; Huang et al, ten patients [8], Lake et al, 87 patients [9]) have been included because it was not possible to extract only the data on inserted and retained foreign bodies in the other 14 series. French et al, [7] described nine cases of retained foreign body, all of which were included in our review. Huang et al [8] described 10 patients with 12 presentations; one person had three presentations and all these were described.…”

“…11 When surgical exploration is indicated, a longitudinal laparotomy is performed to extract the foreign body. 12 To reduce the associated morbidity of an open procedure in our patient, we performed a laparoscopic approach for complete abdominal exploration for possible presence of intestinal or sigmoidal injuries together with removal of this large metallic dilator. We believe that laparoscopy offers a minimally invasive approach and to the best of our knowledge has not yet been reported for the removal of foreign bodies from the rectosigmoid, vagina and uterine.…”

“…The vast majority are inserted for autoerotic purposes, and the majority of these patients are middle-aged homosexual men [48]. There are a myriad of different kinds of RFB described in the literature.…”

“…The oral way is the case mostly encountered in those with poor intellect, mentally retarded, and senile or debilitated persons, also in drug trafficking. On the other hand, RFBs inserted in the rectum per anally are noted most commonly in middle-aged men in context of autoerotic instrumentation [4, 5]. In this paper we described four patients admitted to the emergency department (ED) with RFB related autoerotic activity and reviewed management options in the literature.…”
