Introduction: The sense of coherence has a clear influence on the functioning of all spheres of life. The sense of coherence marks the position of an individual on the health-disease continuum. Aim of the study: The assessment of the sense of coherence in a group of patients with an implanted cardioverterdefibrillator (ICD). Material and methods: Patients with ICDs participated in the study. The study was conducted in a group of 140 patients. Most of them were men. In the study, the authors' own survey and the A. Antonovsky Life Orientation Questionnaire (SOC-29) were used, and medical documentation was analysed. The collected data were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The average score of SOC points was 132.41 (SD = 14.85). Age, professional activity, and financial situation had a statistically significant influence on the total sense of coherence. These variables and the marital status of the respondents had a significant influence on the sense of manageability. The sense of comprehensibility was significantly influenced only by the financial situation. The sense of coherence did not depend on sex, place of residence, living with, or without other family members, education, or support of other people. Conclusions: In the study group only a few sociodemographic variables had a statistically significant impact on the sense of coherence and its components. No relationship between the analysed variables and the sense of meaningfulness was revealed. None of the analysed clinical variables had any significant influence on the sense of coherence and its components.

Introduction: Implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator, used for primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac arrest, can lead to depressive disorders among some patients, which often results in a worse course of the underlying disease and poorer patient cooperation in the therapeutic process. Aim of the study was assessment of the prevalence and severity of depressive disorders among patients after implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator and the relationship between the study variables and sociodemographic situation, factors related to the subjects' health, and the support received by the respondents. Material and methods: The study involved a total of 63 patients aged 23-82 years with an implantable cardioverterdefibrillator. The author's survey questionnaire (which included questions on sociodemographic data, related to the implanted cardioverter-defibrillator, relating to mental health and support received), the BDI-II Beck Depression Inventory, and information from medical records were used to obtain data. Material was statistically analysed using the Statistica 13.1 package from StatSoft, using the Mann-Whitney U-test, Pearson's χ 2 test, and Spearman's rank correlation test. The level of statistical significance was adopted as p < 0.05. Results:The mean score on the BDI-II Beck Depression Inventory for the study group was 23.19 ±12.20 points. Subjects with no or minimal depressive symptoms accounted for 31.7%, individuals with mild symptoms accounted for 14.3%, moderate symptoms accounted for 15.9%, and severe symptoms accounted for 38.1%. The greater the severity of depressive symptoms, the more concerns related to the occurrence of device discharge were reported by respondents (R = 0.33, p = 0.008). Conclusions: Evaluation of the mental state of patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator may help to diagnose depressive disorders in this group of patients and allow identification of the factors that determine them.

The aim of this article is to provide a detailed description of patients' lives after implantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). First, the basic function and mechanism of the device as well as the types of experienced shocks, including phantom shocks, are described. Then, the three most important dilemmas faced by patients are discussed: ICD implantation, battery replacement and device deactivation. Subsequently, the scientific literature on psychopathological symptoms in patients is reviewed. The latest results of research on anxiety and depression in patients with ICD are presented, and the relationship between anxiety and depression and experienced shocks is discussed in detail. The results of a few studies on the occurrence of stress and post-traumatic stress disorder in patients are also presented. In addition, the focus was on the perception of the implantation of a cardioverter defibrillator as a traumatic event. The aim of this article was also to discuss the quality of life of patients with a cardioverter defibrillator. The results of studies that indicate a deterioration, improvement or maintenance of the level of quality of life of patients comparable to those of healthy people are presented. In addition, a specific, important from the perspective of people with ICD aspect of the quality of life, which is the health-related quality of life, was discussed. The results of research in this area are also not unambiguous. In addition, predictors of health-related quality of life were indicated. The article also addresses the issue of changing the identity of patients after implantation of a cardioverter defibrillator. The results of research conducted in this field, which were most often of a qualitative nature, were discussed. In the discussion on the identity of people with ICD, changes in self-image were emphasized, but this issue was not a frequent subject of psychological research. Finally, the challenges faced by partners of patients with an implanted cardioverter defibrillator were characterized. Also in this area, most of the research was qualitative, and the data come from interviews with relatives of cardiac patients.
