Procedural Design of Exterior Lighting for Buildings with Complex Constraints

Abstract: We present a system for the lighting design of procedurally modeled buildings. The design is procedurally specified as part of the ordinary modeling workflow by defining goals for the illumination that should be attained and locations where luminaires may be installed to realize these goals. Additionally, constraints can be modeled that make the arrangement of the installed luminaires respects certain aesthetic and structural considerations. From this specification, the system automatically generates a lightin… Show more

“…Drawing from this body of work, Müller et al [2006] introduced CGA shape, a language for shape grammars 1 for the procedural modeling of architectural buildings. Numerous extensions and variants exist, addressing, for example, visual editing [Lipp et al 2008], additional classes of shapes [Krecklau et al 2010], interconnected structures [Krecklau and Kobbelt 2011], GPU-based execution [Steinberger et al 2014], and specific application domains [Whiting et al 2009;Schwarz and Wonka 2014] (cf. Secs.…”

“…FAN BAO et al show a technique to create procedural facade variations from a single layout [103]. MICHAEL SCHWARZ et al present an approach for designing exterior lighting for buildings with complex constraints [104]. When it comes down to the interior of a building, PAUL MERELL et al present an automatic method for furniture placement following interior design guidelines [105].…”

“…Within the scale of a building, layouts can be generated (Merrell et al, 2010), (Bao et al, 2013b) exhibiting different façades (Musialski et al, 2012a), (Bao et al, 2013a). Exterior Lighting can be designed even for buildings with complex constraints (Schwarz and Wonka, 2014). When it comes down to the interior of a building, furniture can be placed following interior design guidelines (Merrell et al, 2011).…”
