Procedures for Investigating the Effect of Light on Impression

Abstract: This paper reports findings concerning the effect of environmental lighting as a medium that affects user impressions and judgments. Our previous work on this problem used both multidimensional scaling and semantic differential techniques to assess changes in impression as a function of variation in the lighting arrangements. This research was conducted in a lighting demonstration room at the General Electric Lighting Institute at Nela Park in Cleveland. Six different lighting arrangements were used. Results f… Show more

“…Research in areas such as forestry, architecture and urban design [1][2][3] have established that images can be a reasonable surrogate for the real space, particularly on ratings related to aethestics. The limited research in lighting on this topic concurs with this, when representing the real space with photographs 4 , or with highly-detailed simulations 5 .…”

“…Daniel & Meitner, 2000;Danford & Willems, 1975;Rohrmann & Bishop, 2002;Bishop & Rohrmann, 2003] have established that images can be a reasonable surrogate for the real space, particularly on ratings related to aethestics. The limited lighting research on this topic concurs with this, when using photographs [Hendrick et al, 1977], or highly-detailed simulations [Mahdavi & Eissa, 2002].…”

“…These were derived from a larger set of 27 scales commonly used in lighting research [e.g. Hendrick et al 1977], and which have often been successfully abridged [e.g. Mahdavi and Eissa 2002; Newsham et al 2005].…”

“…In lighting research, visual representations of spaces and scenes, presented in a variety of ways, have been used for evaluation purposes. Hendrick et al [1977] conducted early work using projected images from photographic slides. Students completed semantic differential ratings of six scenes (a non-daylit conference room lit in different ways) after viewing each one for 30 seconds; they did not observe the real space.…”
