Process analytical approaches for the coil-to-globule transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) in a concentrated aqueous suspension

Abstract: The coil-to-globule transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel particles suspended in water has been investigated in situ as a function of heating and cooling rate with four optical process analytical technologies (PAT), sensitive to structural changes of the polymer. Photon Density Wave (PDW) spectroscopy, Focused Beam Reflectance Measurements (FBRM), turbidity measurements, and Particle Vision Microscope (PVM) measurements are found to be powerful tools for the monitoring of the temperature-… Show more

“…PolyNIPAM microgels show a complex behavior upon swelling and collapse based on their internal structure. Similar observations, that is, a certain drop in the measurement signal above the VPTT, were already published for polyNIPAM-co-methacrylic acid microgel dispersions [42] as well as polyNIPAM microgel dispersions, [43] and related to inter-particle steric compression and intra-microgel physical interactions or to the formation of µm sized agglomerates, respectively. In addition, other analytical methods have reported unusual signals for this temperature range, which might offer a more detailed explanation.…”

“…For each test, the beaker with the corresponding coal slurry was placed on a lifting platform with agitation (600 rpm), and the PVM probe was immersed in approximately two-thirds of the height of the dispersion . During testing, enlarged images of the observed field were transmitted to the computer in real time for 13 min, and the relative backscatter index (RBI) of each image was calculated by the iC PVM software . RBI is defined as RBI decreases as the particles get finer and as the concentration of particles increases, i.e., image brightness decreases.…”
