Process of translation and adaptation of the Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale

Abstract: Professional competence in nursing is of crucial importance for high quality care and patient related outcomes. A new instrument for measuring competence in nursing has been developed by a Swedish research group. The instrument is called the Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale and is based on national guidelines, and the WHOs European Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery. “…It was psychometrically tested in Sweden and translated into English. [17] For the use in German speaking countries, the scale was translated into plain German language and afterwards culturally adapted for the cultural areas of Austria and Switzerland. “…Naturally, the use of the adapted scale saves time, increases the generalization capacity of the data collected, and allows scholars to research similarities and differences between the societies where the measurements are carried out (Borsa et al, 2012). Valid and reliable tools contribute significant findings to measure the outcomes of nursing care or the quality of nursing education (Nilsson, Gardulf, & Lepp, 2016). However, two important questions need to be analyzed carefully here before an adaptation is performed.…”
