“…Higgs and Jarman, 1975), not a prescriptive advocacy for the future. As Hull (2005) has correctly identified, the intent of the passage in question was to move the debate beyond such simple equivalences rather than to reinforce them. Instead, the post-processual reaction simply moved the debate from one extreme, the palaeoeconomic one, to another extreme, and thus replaced one mono-scalar approach with another, when what was needed was an exploration of differences in scale and the Fig.…”

“…Some of the most successful examples of such analysis are with phenomena or processes that have closely overlapping temporal properties. Hull (2005), for example, has analyzed the interaction between processes occurring within the lifespan of the individual and demographic trends that extend over multiple time spans in the 6000-year sequence of eastern California. Cobb (1991) has demonstrated an interaction between relatively short-term and cyclical patterns of trade extending over centuries in the later prehistoric record of Midwestern North America and cumulative increases in agricultural production over several millennia.…”

“…Changes in procurement strategies are evident, as bow technology became the dominant hunting weapon from ~750-550 BP (A.D. 1200-1400), with arrowheads dominating lithic assemblages throughout California from that point forward (Jones, 1995). From 500-100 cal yr BP, as native populations and trade at village sites increased (Hull, 2009(Hull, , 2005Moratto, 1984), our proxy records show no statistical relationship between vegetation and either fire or climate (Table 2; Figure 6), supporting the human-influenced model. Our findings are supported by work in Yosemite Valley, where little decline in fire was observed during the LIA, as would be expected climatically (Anderson and Stillick, 2013).…”

“…It only refers to content, or the material or observations of evidence interpreted to be humanly produced" (2006: pp. 17-18) (see also Clark et al 1973;Dunnell 1992;Hull 2005). Along this line, we follow Kleindienst (2006) in advocating the concept of the "aggregate" for any grouping of stone artifacts sampled from the stone artifact record.…”
