Process reengineering by using the 4PL approach

Abstract: Purpose – Sectors with high transport volumes face the challenge of reengineering existing processes. Furthermore, new models that support transportation processing are required. One possible model would be a fourth party logistics service provider (4PL) approach in order to increase the efficient use of resources. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method for reengineering a transportation handling process using the 4PL approach. Design/methodo… Show more

“…With an unbiased vision, Metronomes replace the numerous service providers and propose efficient logistic schemes (Persson and Virum, 2001). Being asset-less , this actor faces low pressure in terms of returns on assets (Mehmann and Teuteberg, 2016b) and is less vulnerable to suspicions of favouring its own resources (Win, 2008). However, the downside of this situation pertains to the heightened dependence and opportunism vis à vis traditional providers.…”

“…Bentz and Kammerer (2014) suggest starting the process of 4PL adoption by examining the existing SC and identifying both areas of underperformance and areas for improvement. To do this, Mehmann and Teuteberg (2016) propose a structured activity of process reengineering; here, individual organisations within the SC should simulate the current logistics process against the "target" logistics process to identify the improvements that can be made through the 4PL approach. This step ultimately ensures buy-in and justification of the 4PL adoption across SC actors, a theme that has been found to be important in the literature (Saglietto andC ezanne, 2015a, 2015b) and something that would be clearly beneficial within HSCs given the results of the present study's interviews.…”

“…These applications of IoT allow for the construction of a network-based cyberlogistics system that can be managed by humans. The incorporation of intelligence, automation, and automated choices of technology (IoT), elements of the supply chain, and logistics 4.0 are other important topics to explore in the Fourth Industrial Revolution [65] [66]. A modern smart logistics centre, with intelligent goods arrangement and inventory management systems, is shown in Fig.…”
