Processability modifications of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) by plasticizing, blending, and stabilizing

Abstract: Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was plasticized with dioctyl (o-)phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, and acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC). The thermal properties, mechanical properties, and melt flow ability were studied with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, a universal material testing machine, and a melt flow indexer. ATBC was revealed to be an efficient plasticizer, reducing the glass-transition temperature and increasing the thermoplasticization ability of PHB. We also blended poly(3-hyd… Show more

“…As it can be seen in Fig. 2(b), individual PHB shows two melt peaks: one located at 168.3 ºC which is related to the melting of PHB and a small one peak at 52.3 ºC which can be attributable to some low molecular weight additive in the formulation [26,27]. With regard to the glass transition temperature, typical values of T g for PHB are located between the 2-7 ºC range.…”

“…These authors classified PEG400 as a plasticizer for PHB, due to a reduction in melting temperature of PHB in PHB/PEG blends. Poly(3-hydrobutyrate) plasticized was prepared with dioctyl (o-)phthalate (DOP), dioctyl sebacate (DOS), and dioctyl sebacate (ATBC)(exploit) [42]. It was shown, from the DSC measurements, that only the addition of ATBC leads to an obvious decline in T g and improves other thermal characteristics.…”

“…Wang et al 61 used adding plasticizer ATBC (acetyl tributyl citrate) at 0, 10, 20, 25 and 30% PHB. In this case, the author found that increasing plasticizer content there was a decrease in initial degradation temperature of 224 °C (neat PHB) to 188 °C (30% ATBC).…”
