Processing and Characterization of Polyphenylene Ether/Polystyrene/Nylon-6 Ternary Blends

Abstract: Polyphenylene ether (PPE) is a polymer with very high glass transition temperature, superior thermal stability but poor melt processability. Mainly to improve its processability and chemical resistance, it is blended with Polystyrene (PS) and Nylon-6, respectively. In this research, ternary blends of PPE/PS/Nylon-6 were prepared using co-rotating twin screw extrusion and test specimens were injection molded. The influence of Maleic anhydride and screw speed on the mechanical and thermal properties of the terna… Show more

“…When 15% MCA was added to R‐PET, the LOI of 15‐MCA/R‐PET composite was 26.4%, and the flame retardant reached UL94 3.2 mmV2 grade. This enhancement might be ascribed to MCA was decomposed by heat to produce non‐flammable gases 35 such as NH 3 , N 2 , NO 2 , CO 2 , and water vapor, which could dilute oxygen and flammable gases produced in the combustion process, 16 thus improved the flame retardant of R‐PET. When 15% ADP was added to R‐PET, the LOI of 15‐ADP/R‐PET composite was 30.2%, and the flame retardant reached UL94 3.2 mm V0 level.…”

“…% showed tensile modulus of 3.63 GPa, elongation at break 2.49 and impact strength 20.82 KJ/m 2 . 8 The corresponding properties of PPE/PS/nylon-6/chopped fibre (40 wt. %) were 11.11 GPa, 1.28 and 13.93 KJ/m 2 .…”

“…The glass transition temperature (Tg) of polyphenylene ether is 210°C, which can maintain its good mechanical properties, ame retardant properties and electrical properties in a large temperature range. The dielectric properties of PPO are the best among the ve engineering plastics [3][4][5] . In addition, the dimensional stability of polyphenylene oxide is good at plastic cage, but the disadvantage of polyphenylene oxide is that it has a large melt viscosity and it is di cult to process.…”

“…However, the mechanical properties of the simple blend need to be improved due to the poor interface compatibility between PA66 and PPO. Therefore, some compatibilizers, such as high impact polystyrene and styrene-butene copolymer, were introduced to enhance the compatibility of the PPO/PA66 [2][3]5] .…”
