Processing of Calcium Magnesium Silicates by the Sol–Gel Route

Abstract: In this work, calcium magnesium silicate ceramics were processed through the sol–gel method in order to study the crystalline and morphological properties of the resulting materials in correlation with the compositional and thermal parameters. Tetraethyl orthosilicate and calcium/magnesium nitrates were employed as sources of cations, in ratios specific to diopside, akermanite and merwinite; they were further subjected to gelation, calcination (600 °C) and thermal treatments at different temperatures (800, 100… Show more

“…These vibrations were produced due to contamination with atmospheric CO 2 during the synthesis process 38 . Additionally, previous literatures have reported a distinct peak at around 1300–1400 cm −1 associated with the symmetric stretching vibrations of NO - 3 groups, which originate from nitrate-type precursors used in the precursor solution, since the complete decomposition of nitrate occurs at higher than 600 °C 29 , 39 . So, it is also possible that the observed peak around 1460 cm −1 was actually the overlap of C–O and N–O bands.…”

“…The inorganic powders were synthesized by a sol–gel method and characterized from compositional, structural, and morphological points of view [ 41 ]. The sol–gel method is a wet-chemistry approach that involves the conversion of salt or alkoxide-type precursors first in a solution or colloidal suspension and then in a gel with high viscosity by hydrolysis and polycondensation/polymerization processes; such a gel consists of an extended network built on bridging oxygen and with high amounts of liquid phase embedded [ 42 ].…”

“…Briefly, three different powders were processed, having as a starting point the oxide compositions of diopside (CaMgSi 2 O 6 , D), akermanite (Ca 2 MgSi 2 O 7 , A), and merwinite (Ca 3 MgSi 2 O 8 , M); these were thermally treated at 1000 or 1300 °C. The pulverulent samples employed as mineral loading consist of consolidated blocks with a high percentage of open porosity; the first composition (D) contains diopside as leading crystalline compound, the second (A) is a balanced mixture of diopside, akermanite, and merwinite, and the third (M) has a majority of dicalcium silicate [ 41 ].…”

“…For this reason, it is expected that an excess substitution of Gd 3+ ions will tend to aggregate around the grain boundaries in the form of GdFeO 3 [ 7 ]. Gadolinium orthoferrite nanoparticles have been successfully obtained by various synthesis methods, including co-precipitation [ 8 ], sol–gel [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ], and microwave [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. As compared to other materials, gadolinium orthoferrite nanoparticles are generally considered as efficient materials in various applications, including better gas-sensing performance and medical applications, and gadolinium complexes are the most widely used of all MRI contrast agents [ 16 ].…”
