Processing Phage Therapy Requests in a Brussels Military Hospital: Lessons Identified

Abstract: There is a growing interest in phage therapy as a complementary tool against antimicrobial resistant infections. Since 2007, phages have been used sporadically to treat bacterial infections in well-defined cases in the Queen Astrid military hospital (QAMH) in Brussels, Belgium. In the last two years, external requests for phage therapy have increased significantly. From April 2013 to April 2018, 260 phage therapy requests were addressed to the QAMH. Of these 260 requests, only 15 patients received phage therap… Show more

“…Following this report, phage therapy has been used in specific situations as an Emergency Investigational New Drug therapy to treat multidrug‐resistant bacteria . Belgium has been implementing a magistral phage framework that has allowed the use of tailor‐made phage therapy in a number of patients in the Queen Astrid military hospital in Brussels . Recently, the PhagoBurn trial, a randomised, controlled, double‐blind phase 1/2 trial, studied the efficacy and safety of the PP1131 phage cocktail against Pseudomonas aeruginosa in infected burn wounds.…”

“…Since 2007, phage therapy has been permitted for the treatment of bacterial infections in the Queen Astrid Military Hospital in Brussels, Belgium, under the umbrella of the Declaration of Helsinki (article §37) established by the World Medical Association. According to an article from 2018, external requests for phage therapy in this hospital have significantly increased in the last two years [127]. Phagoburn was a European Research & Development project funded by the European Commission in 2013 and its clinical trial (NCT02116010) ended in 2017.…”
