Processing Speed and Working Memory Performance in Those with Both ADHD and a Reading Disorder Compared with Those with ADHD Alone

Abstract: In previous studies, children with both Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a Reading Disorder were found to have more difficulties with processing speed, working memory, and timed as opposed to non-timed executive functioning (EF) measures when compared with those with either disorder alone. The current study found that older adolescents and adults with both disorders also had more difficulties on processing speed and working memory measures than individuals who only had ADHD. There were no di… Show more

“…Third, because WM capacity is also significant impaired in ADHD (Kasper, Alderson, & Hudec, 2012;Katz, Brown, Roth, & Beers, 2011) and in dyscalculia (Landerl et al, 2009;Schuchardt et al, 2008), it would be particularly interesting to compare WM performance between children with DD and children with those two neurodevelopmental disorders. Note: FSIQ = Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Third Edition) Full Scale IQ, DS = Digit Span subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Third Edition), DD = developmental dyslexia.…”

“…This is an important consideration given that working memory has often been problematic among ADHD samples (Alderson et al, 2010;Engelhardt et al, 2008;Gropper and Tannock, 2009;Kasper et al, 2012;Katz et al, 2011;Martinussen et al, 2005). In one study, researchers did not find a relationship between long term allocentric visual memory difficulties and working memory among temporal lobectomy patients (Feigenbaum and Morris, 2004).…”

“…Studies show that deficits in executive functions, particularly working memory, along with slower processing speeds in many children with ADHD contribute to these difficulties (Katz, Brown, Roth, Beers, 2011;Tannock, 2007).…”
