Safe access to medicinal plants and herbal medicines is guaranteed in the health system. RENAME includes 12 herbal medicines, such as Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) with hypocholesterolemic potential. Treatments with statins can have side effects, and herbal medicines can be an alternative. The study evaluated the effects, after pharmacotherapy, on the lipid and hepatic profiles of hypercholesterolemic patients treated with pills containing standardized artichoke extract (~30 mg/day of chlorogenic acid) supplied by Laboratório Catharinense Pharma Ltda. or Sinvastatin 20 mg/day tablets. The clinical, randomized and double-blind study included 28 hypercholesterolemic patients diagnosed from elective consultations at a UBS in Paraná, following criteria and divided into two groups. The study lasted 90 days, with monthly pharmaceutical consultations and determination of lipid and liver profiles, at the beginning and at the end. The Two-Way ANOVA statistical analysis in GraphPad 8 revealed significant results in the two proposed treatments, and the treatment with Artichoke did not differ statistically from Sinvastatin. Patient adherence and physicians' knowledge about herbal medicines are highlighted points. The results can collaborate with the consolidation of the standardized artichoke extract as an alternative to reach basic health care programs for the treatment of dyslipidemia.
