Proctor Assignment at Carleton University

Abstract: Carleton University needs proctors during examination sessions to oversee the students as they write their final examinations. The process of assigning proctors to examinations is quite complex because of the sheer number of examinations and various complex constraints on allowable assignments. We developed a computer-based system to replace an existing manual system for assigning proctors, freeing up valuable staff time in the overloaded scheduling office. Our system combines some problem-specific heuristics,… Show more

“…Research has been done on staff scheduling for service facilities where most positions require limited training and some use of part-time staff is common. Examples include fast-food restaurants (Love andHoey 1990, Loucks andJacobs 1991), exam proctoring (Awad and Chinneck 1998), liquor stores (Gendron 2005), leasing centers (Sun et al 2005), and gasoline stations (Al-Yakoob and Sherali 2008). In the case of fast-food restaurants, skills (e.g., grilling) are important, as is employee availability (because of the high percentage or part-time employees).…”

“…Transport preferences may also change the schedule of the invigilator. External factors, such as the schedule of public transportation and the individual schedules of members of carpools, are details that affect the schedule (Awad and Chinneck, 1998). Considering the distance between the exam rooms provide that the invigilators are not delayed one after the other (Kahar and Kendall, 2014).…”
