Producing fit‐for‐purpose water and recovering resources from various sources: An overview

Abstract: Natural resources, except wind power and solar energy, are depleting, and therefore it is essential to develop and implement best management practices wherever possible. With respect to water, integrated water management is essential to preserve the fresh water for many generations to come. Producing fit‐for‐purpose water from various sources such as rainwater, wastewater, seawater/brackish water, and stormwater will contribute greatly to conserve the fresh water. By looking at a few wastewater streams, such a… Show more

“…In order to repurpose these varied water sources and recover valuable minerals they may contain in an energy- and cost-effective manner, treatment strategies involving the removal of specific solutes are critical. The recovery and production of fit-for-purpose water from these nontraditional water sources requires the development of next-generation materials capable of solute-tailored separations that are beyond the present capabilities of conventional membranes . Recently, polymeric membranes containing covalently bonded pendant groups, which can be tuned to selectively coordinate target ions, have shown promise for achieving solute-specific separations .…”

“…The recovery and production of fit-forpurpose water from these nontraditional water sources requires the development of next-generation materials capable of solute-tailored separations that are beyond the present capabilities of conventional membranes. 2 Recently, polymeric membranes containing covalently bonded pendant groups, which can be tuned to selectively coordinate target ions, have shown promise for achieving solute-specific separations. 3 The development of such materials is, however, hindered by a lack of fundamental design rules relating polymer structure and functionalization to solute selectivity and transport.…”

“…The myriad chemicals present in effluent, stormwater, and agricultural runoff, , commonly used as reuse waters, underscores the need to consider contaminant profiles in the treatment design of planned and unplanned reuse requirements to minimize potential effects to groundwater/surface-water quality or toxicological effects on plants and animals. There is a lack of field-scale information on the sources and fate of contaminants that occur from multiple reuse water type discharges to a surface-water system. Investigations into the mobilization and transport of WWTP-derived contaminants from rain-induced agricultural runoff from crop fields receiving effluent irrigation is important as there is mounting pressure to implement wastewater reuse to support freshwater supplies …”

“…The first article (Jegatheesan et al, 2021) provides an overview on integrated water management (IWM) and recovering resources. This is followed by an article (Bichueti et al, 2021) on how the sustainable water management can contribute to business performance of the mining industry in Brazil.…”
