“…Additionally, several studies have reported that increasing the rotational speed and the number of passes leads to an ultimate increase in tensile strength. On the other hand, increasing the travelling speed leads to a decrease in the ultimate tensile strength [13][14][15][16][17]. However, an important consideration in surface composite fabrication, aside from the process parameters, is tool wear, which is an undesirable feature and obstacle for the quality of the workpiece.…”

“…Friction stir processing (FSP) was initially derived in 1999 from the work of (Gerlich, 2017;Mishra & Ma, 2005;Mishra et al, 2014) which took its root from a novel technique called friction stir welding (FSW) that was invented in 1991 and patented by the welding institute (TWI) of UK as a solid-state joining method. Afterwards, a large number of research papers have been published for investigating the mechanical properties, microstructure and quality of FSW and FSP components (Narasimharaju & Sankunny 2019;Kundu & Singh 2017;Jian et al 2018;Aliha et al 2016;Taheri-Behrooz et al 2018;Torabi et al 2018;Akbari et al2017Behnagh et al 2012;Shahraki et al 2013;Asadi et al 2012). Since the liberation of FSP in 1999, thousands of articles, hundreds of patents, thousands of textbooks as well as reviewed and peer-reviewed magazines had been in circulation which have been imparting life till date.…”

“…The main microstructural modification takes place in the SZ where the material experiences intense plastic deformation and high temperature causing grain refinement by dynamic recrystallization ( Ref 7). Furthermore, FSP can be used to produce surface composites by incorporating reinforcing particles into the surface ( Ref 2,[8][9][10]. These reinforcement particles are introduced into a hole or groove on the surface, and the rotation of the pin promotes intermixing of particles and the substrate in the near surface layer of the processed metallic substrate.…”

“…Recently, much attention has been paid to the fabrication of Al5083-based surface composites by applying FSP technique ( Ref 4,[8][9][10][11][12][13]. Silicon carbide is one of the most widely used powders to reinforce aluminum alloys because of its low density and high hardness ( Ref 4,[14][15][16][17].…”
