Product architecture design of multi-modal products

Abstract: Incorporating multiple modes enables a product to change between different configurations, such as hybrid electric vehicles and washing machines. This paper investigates how multiple modes are constructed in modular product architecture-especially, how multi-modal modules are designed and used to construct overall product modality. The authors argue that product modality becomes viable by undertaking two strategies: temporal clustering, which activates and organizes different groups of modules in different mod… Show more

“…Dornisch and Mcloughlin (2006) expressed that this system is credible, effective, and applicable and helps to reduce the problems of product evaluation and creative performance, which will reduce dissatisfaction and satisfaction with evaluation or unfairness [34]. Ehmann (2005) points to the need to use this technique inside the studio, which will help to develop the student's abilities, improve his/her creative output; it will also accurately determine the expected products to be obtained from the student [39] which are accepted by the professor [40]. The subject of evaluation and accreditation has become an essential part of higher education [41] and the Rubrics method has become one of the methods in this field.…”

“…Then, irrespective of which definition is applied, modules can also be divided into submodules. 23,25 Therefore, a module has to possess a considerable amount of functionality -more than the product or flow it makes up. For example, LEGO bricks cannot be considered as modules even if they permit construction by combination, because by themselves, they only have limited functionality.…”

“…Methods for discovering function conflicts and handling structure repulsion were not explored. In another direction, Liu et al (2016) proposed a multi-mode product structure design, established a multi-mode module using structure sharing in different modes of partial module structure, and achieved multi-mode switching product operation. Li et al (2016) introduced a function module partition approach for conceptual design of complex product through community detection using weighted and directed complex networks.…”
