Product Design and Supply Chain Coordination Under Extended Producer Responsibility

Abstract: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation focuses on the life‐cycle environmental performance of products and has significant implications for management theory and practice. In this paper, we examine the influence of EPR policy parameters on product design and coordination incentives in a durable product supply chain. We model a manufacturer supplying a remanufacturable product to a customer over multiple periods. The manufacturer invests in two design attributes of the product that impact costs incu… Show more

“…Atasu, van Wassenhove, and Sarvary (2009) show that the efficiency of take-back systems is driven by environmental classification of products, industry structure, and end-user willingness to participate in takeback programs. Subramanian, Gupta, and Talbot (2009) examine the influence of EPR policy parameters on product design and coordination incentives in a durable product supply chain. The paper models two design attributes of the product: performance and remanufacturability, and considers environmental costs during product use (e.g.…”

“…In addition, EPR and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) can be considered other effective ways to achieve supply chain sustainability. Several studies analyzed the impact of these policy regulations on producers' performance in managing the supply chain [21][22][23][24].…”
