Product, process and customer preference alignment in prefabricated house building

Abstract: Much of the extant literature exploits the customer order decoupling point (CODP) from an aggregate product level. We develop a systematic approach to determine the alignment of CODP configurations at product, category and component levels, with customer preferences in terms of their customisation requirements. We adopt a participatory research method incorporating focus groups and interviews with personnel from a German case study company that builds prefabricated houses. From this we determine the product ar… Show more

“…You can't beat the large-panel housing technology by its construction cost and time period. But the consumer qualities of panel housing do not fully meet the needs due to practical impossibility of changing the arrangement and partitions, uniting spaces or its transformation [14,15]. At the same time, the presence of room-sized intermediate slabs and a one hidden seam provide not only good aesthetics of the apartment, but also make it cheaper.…”

“…Many researches focus on the life cycle management of prefabricated construction, and systematically study the prefabricated buildings from the aspects of organizational mode [26], contract management [27], and cooperative innovation [28]. Although the PC technology has been developed relatively recently, its actual performance does not have a significant advantage over the traditional building, which is largely related to its weak organizational coordination and management ability in the implementation [29].…”

“…The implementation of MC depends on fundamental changes in the product development process, so that the diversity of customer requirements is systematically considered, and opportunities for cost savings created (Ferguson et al, 2014;Fettermann, 2013;Piller et al, 2004). These changes depend on the coordinated efforts of three different areas: Customer Integration, Product Design and Operations (Ferguson et al, 2014;Rocha, 2011;Schoenwitz, Potter, Gosling, & Naim, 2017). Customer integration is concerned with understanding the demand for customisation by capturing customers' requirements and translating them into product specifications, customer-supplier interaction process, tools and the solution space definition (Ferguson et al, 2014;Rocha, 2011).…”
