Combustion of coal at thermal power plants generates enormous amounts of coal fly ash (CFA). Proper disposal of CFA is an important issue today because environmental problems are considered a burning issue worldwide. On the other hand, groundnut shells (GNS), regarded as agricultural waste in general, litter landfills everywhere and create soil degradation. Since both CFA and GNS contain abundant silica, this work focuses on extracting amorphous silica from these materials through a total dissolution–precipitation process. The silica was extracted from it and used to prepare titanium oxide (TiO₂) hybrids. The GNSS were extracted from GNS, and the CFAS was extracted from the CFA. The methods used were based on sol–gel. These hybrids were further tested for the performance of their solar cells in dissolving dyes. The overall results of the obtained physical properties of CFAS and GNSS are similar to those of conventional silica. More importantly, TiO₂/GNSS and TiO₂/CFAS hybrids showed enhanced photocatalytic efficiency compared to the pure TiO₂. Therefore, it is evidence of repurposing CFA and GNS, which have high potential for use as sustainable applications in renewable energy and environmental remediation.

This study investigates the effects of incorporating pistachio shell powder and a mixture of Aquilaria agallocha Roxb (AAR) resin with epoxy on the mechanical, dynamic mechanical, thermal, and biodegradability properties of an epoxy composite. Filler loadings ranged from 10 to 35% by volume, in 5% increments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a uniform distribution of the hybrid polymer materials, particularly at 30% natural resin content, enhancing the load-bearing capacity of the composites. The addition of pistachio shell powder and AAR resin significantly improved the flexural modulus and strength of the composites. At a filler volume of 35%, the hybrid polymer exhibited a maximum impact resistance of 2,718 J/m 2 , demonstrating increased energy absorption. Moreover, the hybrid system enhanced the damping factor by up to 30%, suggesting superior dynamic mechanical performance. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the hybrid composites displayed better thermal stability compared to pure epoxy resin. These findings suggest that the combination of pistachio shell powder and AAR natural resin offers a sustainable approach to reinforcing epoxy-based composites, providing improved mechanical and thermal performance for potential industrial applications.

Protection of Stored Common Bean and Maize Grains Using Optimally Synthesized Biosilica from Rice Husk Ash

Losses provoked by insect pests on stored cereals and legumes contribute immensely to reduce food security, especially in rural communities in Sub‐Saharan Africa. The application of integrated control strategies, involving the use of synthetic pesticides, is often expensive and hazardous to humans and the environment. This study was conducted to optimize the production and use of biosilica from rice husk ashes, for the control of Sitophilus zeamais and Acanthoscelides obtectus, major insect pests of stored maize and common bean grains. The amorphous nature of the derived silica molecules coupled with the silanol and siloxane groups on their surfaces seemed to account for silica’s insecticidal effects on the pests, which were more on A. obtectus on common beans than S. zeamais on maize grains, with full mortalities obtained at doses of about 1.25 g per 50 g bean seeds and about 2.25 g per 50 g maize seeds, within 3 and 12 days, respectively. Similarly, the daily lethal dose (LD50) of silica powder required to obtain the mortality of half of the insects was lower on common beans than on maize seeds. The reduced phytotoxic activity of the biosilica on the stored common bean and maize grains indicates therefore that it could make an ecofriendly alternative to conventional protectants for small quantities of stored grains. However, large‐scale studies are needed in order to evaluate its potential use in grain storage systems.
