Production and detection of short-lived metal-containing molecules in the gas phase: a review

Abstract: The combination of laser ablation with laser-induced¯uorescence (LIF) spectroscopy for the study of short-lived metal-containing molecules in the gas phase is reviewed. Results for two free radicals derived from the alkaline-earth metals, MgCCH and BaOH, have been chosen to illustrate these experiments. The information available from vibrationally-resolved LIF studies of these molecules is described and the prospects for future work on metal-containing species is discussed.

“…In 2014, tentative assignments for MgC 2 H in IRC+10216 were given 1 and in 2019 it was confirmed by Cernicharo and co-workers. 2 Ellis and co-workers have recorded the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of MgC 2 H. 53 While the electronic spectra of MgC 2n H (n = 1, 2, and 3) have already been recorded, 32,54 to the best of our knowledge, neither theoretical nor 7) have been studied in the past theoretically. 39−41 Vibrational spectrum of the linear Mg − C 3 anion has been recorded elsewhere using FT infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.…”

“…Ellis and co-workers have recorded the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of MgC 2 H . While the electronic spectra of MgC 2 n H ( n = 1, 2, and 3) have already been recorded, , to the best of our knowledge, neither theoretical nor experimental data are currently available for MgC 6 H 2 isomers.…”

“…Though several experimental studies have been carried out to record the electronic transitions of MgC 2 n H ( n = 1–3) in the visible region (in the gas phase), the number of experimental studies for the odd series MgC 2 n –1 H ( n ≥ 2) appears to be limited. In the past, Largo and co-workers carried out theoretical studies for MgC 3 and MgC 3 H + isomers at the MP2(full)/6-311G(d) and B3LYP/6-311G(d) levels. , Dong et al have observed a great number of magnesium carbon hydride clusters (Mg m C n H x ) by the ablation of Mg foil into a mixture of 10% CH 4 /He expansion gas in their mass spectra .…”
