Production and properties of AlN–BN composite

Abstract: The nitridation of an AlB 2 precursor in a controlled nitrogen flow is examined with the aim of obtaining AlN-BN composite powders. It is shown that superfine powders with uniformly distributed AlN and BN phases and AlB 12 admixture form over the temperature range 1000-1400ºC. The powders do not require further grinding. The morphology and particle size of the powders and the microstructure and properties of hot-pressed samples are studied. The developed material exhibits better mechanical properties (as compa… Show more

“…In most of the systems studied, the combustion temperature is below 1200 o C, so such combustion temperature is not sufficient to synthesize completely not BN only, but AlN also in these cases. Note that gas nitriding the AlB 2 precursor in the similar temperature range 600-1200°C is also accompanied by the formation of by-product AlB 12 [12] and only the rise of temperature of the gas nitriding up to 1600-1900 o C allows to achieve a 94% conversion of AlB 2 in homogeneous composite powder of AlN-BN [5].…”

“…Gas nitriding in less severe conditions: in a stream of nitrogen for 1 hour at 600°C and then for 1 hour at 1200°C, resulted in fabricaton of a composite nanopowder AlN-BN mixed with 10-15 wt. % AlB 12 , the decomposition of which requires higher temperatures [12]. Methods of self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) of nitrides, based on the application of the combustion process to obtain a powder mixture of AlN and BN in one stage, are less costly.…”

“…The flexural strength of the composite ceramics decreased slowly when the BN content was increased. Makarenko et al [20] utilized low-temperature aluminum diboride (AlB 2 ) as a precursor to produce the composite AlN-BN-based powders. Then the compact samples were hot pressed from the synthesized powders with the bending strength of 235-240 MPa.…”
