“…Similar ligninases have been found in other white-rot fungi (Dodson et al 1987;Muheim et al 1990;Niku-Paavola et al 1988), and the mechanisms of lignin depolymerization and degradation are now partially established (Higuchi 1990). However, little is known about the production and activity of the enzymes responsible for lignin degradation during lignocellulose transformation under natural or SSF conditions (Mishra and Leatham 1990).…”

“…The presence or absence of inducers can influence ligninolytic activity in white rot fungi. Veratryl alcohol as an inducer for example, exerts positive effects on the ligninolytic system of several white rot fungi (GIANFREDA et al 1999, DODSON et al 1987. The presence of veratryl alcohol stimulated lignin peroxidase activity in T. versicolor and laccase activity in P. radiata and T. versicolor (GIANFREDA et al 1999, DODSON et al 1987.…”

Basal levels of veratryl alcohol and mineral ions (other than Mn 2+ ) were used under all the culture conditions tested in this study however the effects of excluding veratryl alcohol and mineral ions in the culture medium was not determined.…”

“…In the nitrogen nutrition of these wood rot fungi, proteinases have essential functions for growth in acting on senescent mycelium to utilize fungal protein as a nutrient. However, it was generally observed that ligninolysis by wood rot fungi such as Phanerochaete chr~~sosporiuni or C. versicolor was suppressed by nitrogen compounds in the media (Fenn & Kirk, 1981;Dodson et a/., 1987). If laccase is secreted on the wood surface in large quantities and is rapidly degraded to produce free amino acids under proteolytic conditions, production of other ligninolytic enzymes such as lignin peroxidase could be suppressed and consequently wood degradation inhibited.…”
