Oilseed crops are fundamental for various industrial and food purposes, necessitating advancements in breeding strategies to meet growing demands. Molecular markers and Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) have emerged as powerful tools in oilseed crop improvement. This review explores the diverse applications of molecular markers and MAS in oilseed crops, highlighting their significance in enhancing breeding efficiency and genetic gains. The primary aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the application of molecular markers and MAS in oilseed crop breeding programs. Specifically, it aims to synthesize existing literature and case studies to elucidate the methodologies, advancements, and outcomes associated with the integration of molecular markers and MAS in oilseed crop improvement. The review highlights significant advancements in the application of molecular markers and MAS in oilseed crop breeding. Molecular markers have been extensively utilized for trait mapping, genetic diversity analysis, and selection of desirable genotypes with traits such as high oil content, disease resistance, and abiotic stress tolerance. Integration with conventional breeding methods has facilitated the development of elite oilseed crop varieties with improved agronomic performance and stress resilience. In conclusion, molecular markers and MAS represent valuable tools for accelerating oilseed crop breeding programs. Their integration has led to increased breeding efficiency, precision, and genetic gains. However, challenges such as marker validation, cost-effectiveness, and trait complexity remain to be addressed. Future research efforts should focus on refining marker technologies, enhancing trait mapping studies, and promoting the adoption of MAS in oilseed crop breeding to ensure sustainable production and global food security.

| Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is a significant global crop and a vital raw material for industries. Studying existing cotton germplasm is crucial for discovering new genetic resources for future breeding. In this study, the effectiveness of EST-SSRs and ISSRs markers were compared for assessing genetic variation among 45 Pakistani Bt and non-Bt cotton varieties. ISSR and EST-SSR primers yielded 108 and 28 loci, respectively. The polymorphism was found 32.40% for ISSR, while 89.28% was recorded for SSR primers. Cluster analysis revealed a high level of genetic similarity for ISSR (average 0.92) and EST-SSR (average 0.85) among cotton genotypes. The mean polymorphic information content (PIC) value was 0.25 for ISSR, whereas it was recorded 0.48 for EST-SSRs. Confusion probability (Cj) exhibited a negative association with discriminating power (Dj), while Dj displayed a positive association with PIC. Marker discriminating statistics showed that EST-SSRs have a high expected heterozygosity of polymorphic loci (Hep) as compared to ISSR, along with a higher marker index value (MI). The effective multiplex ratio for ISSRs (1.40) was greater than EST-SSRs (1.12). The structural analysis revealed 6 sub-clusters for EST-SSRs and 4 sub-clusters for ISSRs. This phylogenetic study is crucial for identifying promising genotypes for breeding programs, especially given the limited genetic diversity in cotton breeding. The study showed that Bt cotton genotypes share a high genetic similarity, emphasizing the need for introducing diverse or exotic genotypes into breeding programs to enrich genetic diversity. Additionally, marker-discriminating indices can aid in selecting effective markers to assess genetic variation, facilitating the development of improved cotton varieties with desired traits.

Vegetable oil produced from seeds and fruits of oilseed crops is in the form of triacylglycerol (TAG), and their fatty acid (FA) composition varies depending on the plant species. In the Arabidopsis model plant, the metabolism of FA and TAG biosynthesis has been well elucidated through genetics, molecular biochemistry, and genomics (Li-Beisson et al., 2013). However, studies on the metabolic mechanism of FA and TAG synthesis in various oilseed crops are scarce.Given the need for research in oilseed crops, this special issue covers recent research on genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying oil-crop traits, specifically about FA. The first is the discovery of a novel transcription factor network that regulates FA synthesis and changes in FA composition by abscisic acid (ABA) treatment of oil palm. In addition, research in Physaria fendleri has been applied to enhance the production of industrially useful hydroxy FAs (HFAs), and transcriptomic analysis of gymnosperm Torreya grandis Fortune ex Lindl. kernels provided further clarity on FA metabolism.
