“…It is pointed out that this value is to be regarded as an upper limit for the frequency of the primary gamma rays, due to the possibility of extreme fluctuations in the first nuclear interaction producing a large number of neutral pions. Such a process has been shown to be possible by Narayan (1964). An anisotropy of the mu-poor showers may be expected if the most important mechanism for their production is the initia1on by gamma rays which originate from the decay of ny mesons produced in the collisions of cosmic rays and hydrogen nuclei.…”
